Your Fly Fishing Guides – About Us

jim oneal with another nice utah brown trout

Jim with a beautiful Utah brown trout.

Jim – Many of you already know or recognize Jim O’Neal (photo right) and have fished with him as he has guided many folks for the years on the Provo River and surrounding areas.

Jim has fly fished the Provo River for 50 years and was guiding folks before it was “cool” and long before guiding became a way to make a living.

Jim is a lifelong fly fisherman who was taught by his grandfather (also a lifelong fisherman). Jim tied his first dry fly and caught his first rainbow trout in 1953.

From my experience, Jim’s favorite activities are fly fishing and teaching people to fly fish. And yes, he also likes to taking video while fishing.

Dan – I was born and raised in North Carolina and came to Utah in 1992 to continue Graduate School at Utah State.

I worked as a wildlife Biologist for the Utah Division of Wildlife for 14 years.

As a young man, I built fish ponds in West Africa and lived there for almost three years.

I’ve been a lifelong fisherman, but my fly fishing education didn’t really progress until I met Jim.

Jim and I regularly fish and take fishing videos together and we always guide together.

I think we make a unique team, not just a couple of fishing guides. And remember you are getting two fly fishing guides at the same time, so groups of three or four are not a problem.

We Provide All the Fishing Gear You Need

It doesn’t matter if you don’t have any fishing gear at all or you just want to try out different gear, we have everything you need.

We have all the waders, boots, fly fishing equipment and flies you need, including Jim’s special hand tied flies that you won’t find anywhere else. In fact, we only fish with flies we tied.

The majority of our guided trips are on the Middle or Lower Provo River system, but we often fish more remote rivers and streams.

But because of the travel time involved, trips to remote streams are full-day trips and are dependent more upon the season than the weather.

We fish in all weather, so bring rain gear if it looks like rain or your cold weather gear if its cold, but we will take care of you if you’re not prepared. Remember to bring a pair of socks (above the ankle) for wading.

We usually take video while we’re fishing, but we won’t force you to take a copy of your fishing trip home with you.

Recommendations for Fishing with Jim and Dan at Backcountry Adventures

Jim O’Neal is not only one of the most knowledgeable fly fishers I know with better than 40 years experience on Utah waters; he is a gifted teacher as well.

Jim has the ability to work patiently with beginners & strives at making women, children and 1st timers at ease almost right away.

I recommend him frequently when people ask me who to contact for both guided fly fishing trips and for lessons” – Julie Zicha Fall River Fly Rods

Excerpt (See entire testimonial): The Provo River is a very technical river to fish… most people need assistance from a guide to catch fish… One guide stands out from the rest. Jim O’Neal. – Phil Bair Noseeumfly.com

Dan and Jim provide the ultimate outdoor experience…and you will catch fish!

They have decades of experience in fly fishing and also exceptional knowledge of local ecosystems, so you will come away learning more than just fishing.

I have fished with guides from coast to coast and these guys are as patient and knowledgeable as you will find anywhere.” – Barry, Cary NC

My experiences with Jim O’Neal have convinced me of the deep understanding that he has of trout! He knows their natural home and environment well, he knows their many feeding patterns, and also where they are located morning, noon and evenings on our rivers.

And, he knows the bugs in the river and the right intimation to use! He has a wealth of information that has come from many years of experience and dedication to this exciting sport.

Besides all of this, Jim is a really nice person, I would highly recommend him” – Don W. Pectol
